MSC Opera joined the MSC fleet in 2004 and served as its flagship until 2006 when MSC Musica was built. Sophia Loren became the cruise liner’s Godmother on June 26, 2004. The ship departed on her maiden voyage on June 27, 2004.

MSC Opera has a tonnage of 59,058 GT and a capacity of 2,679 guests and 728 crew members. She belongs to the company’s Lirica class and has three sister ships: MSC Armonia, MSC Sinfonia, and MSC Lirica.
