Christmas On A Cruise Ship: Inspiring Stories By Cruise Travelers

What’s your ideal way to celebrate Christmas? Would you leave your sweet home with a Christmas tree and fireplace and go on a holiday journey? We asked several cruise lovers about what it’s like to celebrate
My best Christmas on a Cruise Ship was on Holland America's annual holiday cruise from South America to Antarctica. We woke up to a White Christmas... scenic cruising on the Amalia Glacier in Chile. After the glacier, we came inside for hot chocolate and a visit from Santa Claus.
Many other Christmas special touches were on board - including caroling in front of the big Christmas tree in the main lobby to ice sculptures and special holiday desserts.
The itinerary changes annually, but Christmas Eve and Day are usually spent in southern Chile or Argentina, at Cape Horn, or Antarctica itself.
My wife and I have talked for at least three years about going on a cruise for Christmas. The idea of getting away from all the family obligations - and just spoiling ourselves - on Christmas sounds amazing. We've spent other holidays on a cruise and loved it.
The big reason we haven't done it yet is that the cost of Christmas cruises can be pretty high compared to the weeks before or the weeks after the holiday. Still, seeing the pictures online of the cruise ships decorated for the holidays, we know that Christmas on a cruise would be a memorable - and stress-free way to spend the holiday.
Have you ever celebrated Christmas on a cruise?
How was your holiday on a ship?
I spent one Christmas on a small boat for 15 Upriver on the Brazilian Amazon. Started the day swimming in the river hoping to dodge piranha. Turkey feast appeared for lunch.
The next year I flew out Christmas day to join a Mekong Delta cruise through Cambodia and Vietnam.
What is the best destination for the Christmas cruise as for you?
Holiday markets in Europe is another option since it has a more traditional feel of Christmas. Absent that for me having Christmas carols on Dec 24 for Christmas Eve and flying out on Christmas Day gave me both the familiar festivities and a new adventure.

My family celebrated Christmas several years ago while sailing with Royal Caribbean. The ship was beautifully decorated for the holiday including a massive Christmas Tree on the Promenade Deck. A special Christmas dinner was served in the dining room and kids could even visit Santa.
We brought the holiday spirit into our stateroom by purchasing window clings from the Dollar Store. One cling was a Christmas Tree, so Santa was able to leave a few gifts under our "tree." Our Elf even appeared everyday causing a bit of mischief in the room.
It was a magical experience that I highly recommend to families wanting a fun and relaxing vacation over the Christmas holiday.
We hope you’ve got enough inspiration! However, no matter where you find yourself on Christmas Day - at home with your family, at work or on the journey - look around and let in the true spirit of Christmas.
