It was built under a vow given by individuals on the eve of the Franco-Prussian War. Two merchants pledged to finance the construction of the basilica if France wins the war. In spite of the long siege of Paris, the attack was repulsed, and in 1875 the construction had been started. The basilica turned out to be impressive both inside and outside, and it has become one of the most significant sites of the Roman Catholic Church. The interiors of the Basilica are forbidden to photograph.
