Santa Maria De Montserrat Abbey

Nikolkaya • 3 minutes read • July 1st, 2016
The Benedictine abbey of

Montserrat

is the spiritual symbol and religious center of Catalonia; it's a place of pilgrimage for Catholics from around the world.
1montserrat-abbey.jpgWikipedia says: "The name of the monastery, situated at an altitude of 2365 feet (721 m) above sea level, derives from the mountainous area of Montserrat ("Cut Mountains") 31 miles (50 km) northwest of

Barcelona

, where thousands of limestone bizarre cliffs are towering in a small space of 6 X 3 miles (10 x 5 km). The human imagination gave amusing names to certain rocks: Mummy, Bishop's belly, Elephant's trunk, Bernard's Horse. In 1987, the natural complex, adjacent to the monastery, was declared to be a national park of Catalonia."
"

Catalonia in miniature

" remarkably illustrates real landscapes and views:
2montserrat-abbey.jpgThere's only one inaccuracy - the second lift-funicular, in fact, ascends from the level of the buildings to the top of the mountain. That is, one use the first elevator to get to the monastery, but there you need to change lifts to ascend higher.
