Spirit of Discovery is a 58,250 GT cruise ship operating for Saga Cruises. Built by Meyer Werft, the ship was officially delivered on 24 June 2019 and began operations on 10 July 2019. She is Saga Cruises' first-ever new-build ship and the largest ship to ever sail for Saga.

History

Planning and construction timeline

In October 2015, Saga Cruises, known for acquiring secondhand vessels, pursued new-builds out of aspirations to expand its offerings and continue to meet the demands of the upscale, boutique cruise market. That month, Saga Cruises announced an order for their first new-build, placing an order with Meyer Werft for the proposed 55,900 GT ship scheduled for a 2019 delivery. The order also came with an option for an identical sister ship, now known as the Spirit of Adventure and slated for delivery in 2021.

On 29 March 2017, Saga Cruises revealed the name of its first new-build to be the Spirit of Discovery.

On 1 March 2018, the first steel was cut for the Spirit of Discovery at Meyer Werft. Construction officially began with her keel-laying and coin ceremony on 28 June 2018. On 12 May 2019, she was floated out and later completed her conveyance across the river Ems on 26 May 2019 to begin her sea trials in the North Sea.

Spirit of Discovery was officially delivered to Saga Cruises on 24 June 2019 before its arrival into the United Kingdom on 28 June, where she was scheduled to officially be christened at the Port of Dover on 5 July, making her the first ship to be christened at Dover in more than a decade. Shortly after her delivery, she incurred an incident when she collided with bollards at Great Sea Lock upon leaving Emden during the evening of 24 June. She sustained several superficial abrasions and scratches, but the bollards received significant damage.

On 5 July 2019, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall officially christened Spirit of Discovery at Dover, ahead of its maiden voyage on 10 July, dubbed "British First," which circumnavigated the United Kingdom and included calls to Ireland.

Design

Saga Cruises, as a part of Saga Holidays, is designed to provide British boutique vacations for those aged 50 and over. The Spirit of Discovery has been designed for an all-inclusive cruising experience, set to be fully implemented in November 2019, with the boutique concept in mind for its included accommodations, amenities, offerings, and perks, such as drinks, dining options, and Wi-Fi.

The ship is outfitted with 540 staterooms, all of which include balconies, for its 999 passengers, with 100 of the staterooms dedicated for solo travelers. The ship also employs 523 crew members to serve all passengers.

Spirit of Discovery is built to Polar Code, together with her sister ship, Spirit of Adventure.
